My Goals for This Week:
Expand my project, meet with my mentor, and finish the "Truth About..." book.
My Mentor:
This weekend I had a meeting with my mentor, Laurel Spence. We went over about TPSP (I answered any questions she had about the project) and I asked her a few questions about contraceptives and STD's. She mentioned a few contraceptives that I were not familiar with (like depo provera), which I made a note of to research further. Our talk about STD's is the reason I chose to research them all next week.
My Research:
So this past week, I have been looking at the teen pregnancy rates by state (using
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/vitalstats.htm which unfortunately goes up to 2008, but also goes back to the year 1990). Specifically I looked at this table: http://205.207.175.93/Vitalstats/TableViewer/tableView.aspx which listed all of the states, and gave birth numbers by race, by age (under 15, 15-19, etc.). I was finally able to finish the "Truth About..." book, and took notes on the things inside the book I thought were worth looking into further, or on the things I knew little to nothing about. These can be found at the bottom of the bibliography page (as a reference for further research on the internet).
My Goals for Next Week:
Next week I would like to focus more on STD's, which I feel that I have been neglecting so far in my research. I plan to look at all of the different STD's, and create a guide for myself over the myths concerning them, the rates of the STD's in different states, and the ways to prevent them (along with the basic information about the diseases).
