MY GOALS FOR THIS WEEK:
Do research on teen and parent opinion on how sex education should be covered/how the class should be structured to help with writing lesson plans later on.
MY MENTOR:
I am currently waiting for my mentor to get back to me on the bill, however it will be sent out by Monday.
MY RESEARCH:
Before this week I had found a study from NPR that talked about parent's feelings on how important sex education was, the chances of teens having sex before marriage, and how much of a threat STDs and pregnancy was to teens. The study can be found here: http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/2004/jan/kaiserpoll/publicfinal.pdf
Given this, I thought it would be relatively easy for me to find other studies of parent and teen opinions on sex education. I was somewhat wrong. Most studies that I did find were from the early 00s or earlier, which I am not enthusiastic about using considering that there's a completely different set of parents with different attitudes now than 10 years ago.
The most recent survey that I could find comes from 2007, and you can find here: http://archpedi.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=205706
The survey found that parents prefer a balanced sex education that pushes for abstinence but still provides ample information on contraceptives. This is the same opinion that the NPR survey also generated.
I tried to find articles and surveys on teen's opinions on sex education- what they wanted to know and felt about sex education. I was unable to find anything on this, which was disappointing.
I found a few studies on parent-teen interactions about sex (advice, warning, etc.), but I was unable to find any articles in the 2007-2015 time range, and were free for me to access.
Knowing that those articles are out there, I will spend a little more time on this next week. I know that information is out there- I just need to figure out how to access it.
MY GOALS FOR NEXT WEEK:
Find examples and templates to work my lesson plans off of, and begin work on my next speech.
