My Goals for This Week:
Create a guide for myself on STDs.
My Mentor:
I did not have any contact with my mentor this week, but next week I will be emailing her to talk about our next meetings.
My Research:
List of STDs: Chancroid, Chlamydia, Genital Warts (HPV), Gonorrhea, Hepatitis (A,B, and C), Herpes (HSV1 and HSV2), HIV/AIDS, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Lymphgranuloma Venereum (LGV), Mycoplasma Genitalium, Nongonococcal Urethritis (NGU), Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), Pubic Lice, Syphilis, Trichomoniasis. (There are diseases that can be transferred through sex, but these are the ones that are commonly transferred through sex, or are only transferred through sex.)
The most common STDs in the United States are: HPV, HSV-2, Trichomoniasis, Chlamydia, HIV, Hepatitis B, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis (from the cdc: http://www.cdc.gov/std/stats/sti-estimates-fact-sheet-feb-2013.pdf ) HPV is by far the most common STD, with about 79,000,000 cases in the United States. HPV has no cure, but there are cures for the disease it causes (like genital warts and cervical cancer). There are over 70 different types of HPV, although some of them do have vaccinations (which are recommended given that most sexually active adults will contract this STD in their lifetime).
Once I am done with my notes on all the STDs in the list above, I plan to make it available on this site (under the bibliography or as a PDF file).
My Goals for Next Week:
This next week I need to contact my mentor and continue my notes on STDs.
